A rare melanistic jaguar has been captured on a trail camera in Honduras for the first time in ten years, showing conservation efforts are working.
Trail cameras are patient witnesses. They wait in the forest for months or years, recording whatever passes by. In 2026, one camera in Honduras's Merendón mountain range captured something extraordinary: a melanistic jaguar, known locally as the cloud jaguar, moving through the trees for the first time in ten years.
The sighting did not happen by chance. For a decade, conservation organisation Panthera and its partners have been running anti-poaching ranger patrols, investing in monitoring technology and reintroducing prey species including peccaries and iguanas to restore the food chain the jaguar depends on.
Honduras has one of the highest deforestation rates in Latin America, making the Merendón range especially significant. It sits within the Jaguar Corridor, a connected habitat stretching from Mexico to Argentina that allows jaguars to roam, find mates and maintain the genetic diversity their species needs.
The original 2016 sighting of a jaguar in this area was one reason Panthera launched a conservation initiative between Honduras and Guatemala. Since then, the work has steadily grown, and Honduras has committed to eliminating deforestation by 2029.
Jaguars are classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, yet they remain among the more successfully conserved big cats when dedicated organisations focus their efforts over many years. This sighting is evidence of exactly that.
