Almost 700 historic buildings in Ireland are set to benefit from €8.1 million in conservation support under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme 2026. The funding includes dedicated support for thatched buildings, a traditional form of construction that needs specialist care.
Small grants for historic buildings can have an effect beyond the individual property. A repaired roof, stable wall, conserved shopfront or protected thatch keeps character in streets and villages that would otherwise slowly lose their older fabric.
The scheme is aimed at conservation rather than cosmetic renovation. That distinction matters because older buildings often need careful materials and methods. Using the wrong repair can cause long-term damage even when the intention is good.
By spreading support across hundreds of buildings, Ireland is protecting ordinary heritage as well as famous monuments. The result is a quieter kind of preservation: many places repaired enough to remain part of daily life.
