England has announced its largest ever government investment in threatened species recovery, with £60 million over three years for the Species Recovery Programme and a further £30 million dedicated to species recovery on the national forest estate. The programme is administered by Natural England and is intended to support work that directly helps native species recover.

The funding is designed for practical conservation rather than general awareness. Species recovery can include habitat restoration, captive breeding, reintroductions, monitoring and targeted action for animals and plants that are close to being lost from parts of their former range.

This matters because many threatened species need more than legal protection on paper. They need suitable habitat, connected landscapes, enough food, safe breeding places and people on the ground who can act at the right time of year.

The scale of the investment gives conservation groups and public bodies a stronger base for multi-year work. For wildlife, that continuity matters: a breeding season, a release programme or a habitat restoration plan often needs several years before results are visible.
