Ireland is investing €13.6 million in 103 projects designed to improve free-flowing rivers by dealing with physical barriers such as dams and weirs. The work is part of the Barrier Mitigation Programme, which aims to restore better movement through waterways.

River barriers can block fish migration, alter water flow, trap sediment and weaken river ecology. Some structures still have a useful purpose, but others are old, unused or more damaging than helpful. Assessing them carefully allows restoration teams to choose removal, modification or other mitigation.

The scale of 103 projects is significant because rivers work as systems. A single improvement can help one stretch of water, but a programme across many catchments can begin to reconnect wider aquatic networks.

Free-flowing rivers are useful for wildlife and people. They support fish, invertebrates, cleaner habitats and more natural floodplain processes. Ireland’s investment recognises that river restoration often begins with removing or softening the obstacles built into the water over generations.
