Across Japan on Children’s Day, colourful koinobori carp streamers flew over rivers and parks, celebrating the health and happiness of children.

What happened

Koinobori carp streamers are flown on May 5 to wish children strength and perseverance, because carp swim upstream against the current.

In Kazo, Saitama Prefecture, Japan’s largest koinobori measuring 100 metres long was flown over the Tone River.

Families display traditional samurai dolls indoors as symbols of courage and protection for children.

Children’s Day was designated in 1948 and celebrates the happiness and wellbeing of all children.
