Serbia Sees Hybrid Cars Outsell Petrol Vehicles for the First Time

In Q1 2026, sales of new hybrid vehicles in Serbia surpassed petrol car sales for the first time, marking a turning point in the country’s shift toward cleaner transport.

What happened

Q1 2026 sales data show hybrid vehicle sales exceeded petrol car sales in Serbia for the first time in the country’s history.

The shift reflects rising fuel costs, expanding hybrid model availability and a maturing second-hand hybrid market.

Serbia also increased its renewable energy capacity by 11 percent between 2024 and 2025, reaching four gigawatts.

Serbia’s transmission operator signed grid connection contracts for seven standalone battery storage projects in the same period.

Why it is good news

When hybrid cars outsell petrol cars in a country like Serbia, it signals that the shift to cleaner transport is no longer limited to wealthy, early-adopter markets.
